This presentation by Azin Farahani from Granlund Oy explores how building simulation data is applied to two critical engineering problems: energy efficiency and indoor thermal conditions. The first part addresses energy efficiency using a new hotel example, covering thermal zoning, standards-driven inputs, weather file selection ranging from statistical averages to future climate projections, and sanity checks for annual energy demand. It also reviews efficiency measures like envelope upgrades and heat pumps, followed by an exercise comparing purchased energy. The second part examines the indoor conditions path, focusing on the overheating risks of well-insulated buildings during summer heatwaves. It highlights the methodological shift toward high-resolution temporal and spatial room modeling, thermal comfort and health standards such as degree-hour limits, and strategies for balancing passive and active mitigation solutions.
